How to respec a Shell

The August 29 update introduces Mether’s Severance. Give the item to Zhirelle, the Shell keeper, to reset a Shell and recover its spent Glimpses. The notes also say Merrick sells it and restocks as you progress; they do not give a guaranteed restock timer or purchase price.

The September 14 hotfix additionally allows using Mether’s Severance at the Genessa trainer. For players changing builds, this is a documented alternative rather than a reason to start a new playthrough.

Can upgrade resources run out permanently?

The Week 1 notes make Glimpses and Tarcores renewable, allowing all Shells and Tarstones to be upgraded in one playthrough. This does not make every upgrade free or instantly available. Compare the current cost and your remaining inventory before committing.

Three items to distinguish

ItemDocumented purposeWhat to check before using it
Mether’s SeveranceResets a Shell and returns the Glimpses spent on it.The selected Shell and refund prompt.
Glimpse StoneLoses durability as enemies are defeated, then breaks into Glimpses.Durability and current item description.
Egon’s StoneRevives you at a dungeon entrance at a durability cost; breaking protects Gloom for that death. The break condition, rather than assuming every death is protected.

These descriptions come from the Week 1 announcement; they do not establish every location, material drop or upgrade value. Fragile Tarstones have their own break-and-reward rules.

Later fixes that matter to these items

The September 24 hotfix addresses dungeon loading and dropped-Gloom problems with Egon’s Stone, plus gamepad cancellation and Genessa interaction issues involving Mether’s Severance. Compare your installed update before diagnosing one of these problems as intended behavior.

Before changing your build

  1. Record your current Shell upgrades so you can recreate the setup if desired.
  2. Read the actual reset confirmation and refund on your platform.
  3. Recheck abilities after the reset instead of assuming a saved loadout was restored.
  4. Separate Shell respec from NG+ carry-over, which is a different system.

This is an official-source reference, not a tested farming route or a promise that all old saves recover automatically after a patch.
