Mortal Shell II Lore
A standalone sequel
Mortal Shell II is a standalone sequel to Mortal Shell (2020). You don’t need to have played the original to follow the story — but returning fans will recognise characters, Shells and themes.
The Harbinger
You are the Harbinger, a being that can abandon its body and inhabit the Shells of the dead. The Harbinger’s nature and history are part of the mystery the game unfolds.
The eight lost warriors
The official description: “The forgotten Shells of eight lost warriors are scattered throughout Mortal Shell II’s ravaged world.” These eight Shells are the game’s class system — each a character with a history:
- Eredrim the Venerable — returning from the original; a heavy veteran warrior
- Tiel the Acolyte — returning from the original; an agile, poison-adjacent acolyte
- Proxima the Broodseeker — new to the sequel; the most discussed of the new Shells
- Five more — confirmed by the “eight” count, detailed in-game
Each Shell being a lost warrior means the lore is playable: possessing a Shell is also inhabiting its story.
The state of the world
The world is described as ravaged — the aftermath of the original game’s events and further calamities. Communities puzzle out why these warriors fell and what the Harbinger’s return means for the land.
Returning characters
Eredrim and Tiel are the headline returning Shells. The original’s mysterious tone — sparse dialogue, environmental storytelling — is carried into the sequel.
What to expect after launch
A full lore timeline and character database will be published after the game launches: dialogue files, item descriptions and environmental Lore (all datamined sources will be credited).
